چکیده
Abstract Following rapid decompression in the conduit of a volcano, magma breaks into ash- to block-sized fragments, powering explosive sub-Plinian and Plinian eruptions that may generate destructive pyroclastic falls flows. It is thus crucial assess how up fragments. This task difficult, however, because subterranean nature entire process original size pristine fragments modified by secondary fragmentation expansion. New textural observations pumice lapilli reveal some primary products survive sintering together within seconds break-up. Their distributions reflect energetics fragmentation, consistent with experiments. Pumice aggregates offer unique window previously inaccessible could be used determine potential energy fragmentation.

15 صفحه اولFragmentation of a porous viscoelastic material: Implications to magma fragmentation
[1] Fragmentation of vesicular magma by rapid decompression is one of the most likely triggers for explosive eruptions. In this phenomenon the decompression rate and the viscoelastic nature of magma are considered to be key factors. In order to obtain a clear idea on the effects of these two factors, controlled fragmentation experiments have been conducted. These experiments have three advantag...

Fragmentation and restructuring of soft-agglomerates under shear.
Soft-agglomerate restructuring, break-up (or fragmentation) and relaxation are studied in a simple shear flow by a discrete element method (DEM). The agglomerates, held together by van der Waals forces, rotate in the shear flow and are stretched into nearly linear structures (fractal dimension approaches unity) until they fracture at their weakest point resulting in lognormally-shaped fragment ...
متن کاملCrystallization Stages of the BishopTuff Magma Body Recorded in Crystal Textures in Pumice Clasts
The BishopTuff is a giant silicic ignimbrite erupted at 0·76Ma in eastern California, USA. Five pumice clasts from the late-erupted Bishop Tuff (Aeolian Buttes) were studied in an effort to better understand the preand syn-eruptive history of the Bishop magma body and place constraints on the timescales of its existence. This study complements and expands on a previous study that focused on ear...
